The recognition and the important role of the Cyprus Institute, as a Regional Research Center of Excellence, is confirmed by the securing of funding for five research proposals, according to the latest evaluation results in the highly competitive action “Marie Skłodowska-Curie” (MSCA) of the European research program .
Securing funding for five of the six proposals submitted, involving researchers from the Cyprus Institute, is another achievement of a number of successful national funding outcomes. and European programs.
The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions project aims to help build Europe on the pillars of research and innovation, while investing in the long-term careers of leading researchers. The MSCA action seeks to implement doctoral programs through collaborations of research institutes from all over Europe, working in interdisciplinary fields, but also through the training of highly qualified doctoral candidates.
At the same time, this action aims to enhance the creativity and innovation of researchers, but also to ensure their long-term employment. These doctoral programs will meet the well-defined needs in various fields of research and innovation, promote researchers in both academic and non-academic fields, and offer research training as well as communication skills related to innovation and long-term employment. p>
The proposals that secured funding are:
“CLOUD Doctoral Network” (CLOUD-DOC) is a research project involving the Center for Excellence in Climate and Atmospheric Research (CARE-C) of IKY, and is expected to focus on the study under laboratory conditions of air oxidation chemistry, fire and growth, which are responsible for the formation of aerosol particles in cold regions of the atmosphere. On the IKY side, the coordinator of the program will be Assoc. Prof. Theodoros Christoudias, with the program coordinated by Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main. The participating countries are Austria, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland.
“Advanced Computing, Quantum Algorithms, and Data-driven Approaches for Science, Technology, and Engineering” (AQTIVATE) is a research program in which the Computer Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC) of IKY participates, with the aim of offering an interdisciplinary training program for fifteen fellows, who will specialize in the use of high-performance computers, in the development of scalable algorithms and machine learning approaches, but also in the exploration of quantum computing by applying to research programs in physics, engineering and biology. On the IKY side, the project is coordinated by the Director of CaSToRC, Professor of IKY and the University. Cyprus, & nbsp; Konstantia Alexandrou, with the research program coordinated by the University of Cyprus. The participating countries are Cyprus, France, Germany, Italy and Sweden.
“Combination Therapy for the Treatment of Metastatic MELanOma Using MAgnetic NanoparticlES” (MELOMANES) is a research program in which the Computer Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC) of IKY participates, and focuses on computational and in silico approaches, which will be used a better understanding of experimental data sets, and to facilitate the establishment of statistically significant relationships between the measured biological activity profiles of Fe @ CNT conjugates and their physical, chemical and other properties, either measured experimentally or calculated from the conjugation structure. From the IKY side, the program is coordinated by Prof. Vangelis Harmandaris (ERA Chair), with the program being coordinated by the Center National de la Recherche Scientifique. The participating countries are Austria, Cyprus, Finland, France, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
“Multi-sensory Solutions for Increasing Human-building Resilience in the Face of Climate Change” (MuSIC) is a research project in which the Energy, Environment and Water Resources Research Center (EEWRC) of IKY participates. The goal of the program is to make the interior and exterior of a building more functional and sustainable, as well as to provide city management systems with scientific boundaries of passive and hybrid building design. This program is expected to provide more sustainable, predictable and acceptable environments and solutions for future generations to increase resilience to climate change. This will be made possible by the application of high-tech multi-sensory and multidimensional solutions related to research and industrial development. The coordinator of the program on behalf of IKy is Prof. Salvatore Carlucci, with the project being coordinated by the Universitätsklinikum Aachen. The participating countries are Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Serbia, Spain and the Netherlands.
“Towards Competitive, Reliable, Safe and Sustainable Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) Plants” (TOPCSP) is a research project involving the Energy, Environment and Water Resources Research Center (EEWRC) and the Computer Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC) of IKy. The program focuses on the collection of solar energy (CSP) with thermal energy storage (TES), which is a key technology to support the transition to a competitive and sustainable energy system. The TOPCSP project will include research activities aimed at reducing the cost of existing CSP installations, increasing the temperature of the next generation heat transfer facilities of CSP installations, developing more efficient power units, optimizing the installation design and automating the design. key components, such as receivers, using Artificial Intelligence approaches. The coordinators of the research program on behalf of IKy are Prof. Manuel Jesus Blanco (ERA Chair) and Assistant Prof. Michalis Nikolaou. The research program is coordinated by the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, and the participating countries are Belgium, Cyprus, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Spain.
