The Parliament voted into law on Thursday a law proposal by AKEL MPs Nikos Kettiros, Christos Christofides and Christos Christofias, which amends the Law on Provision of Housing Assistance to Displaced Persons, Ill Persons and Other Persons, which sets a time frame of six months within which the Housing Assistance Committee of the Displaced Persons Care and Rehabilitation Service must complete the application review process.

With the existing regime, which does not provide time frame for examining the applications, there are serious delays, which have a chain effect and substantially affect the planning of the beneficiaries for their housing.

The law was approved with 32 votes in favor.

During the debate the President of the Refugee Committee and one of the proposers of the proposal Nikos Kettiros said that the proposal was submitted to resolve the long delay in examining applications which is due, as he clarified, not to the incompetence of the service of care, but understaffed and called on the Ministry of Finance to take care of the staffing.

He said that applications from 2021 are still being considered while he was informed just today that in Limassol and Paphos the meeting in October was postponed for the examination of applications.
