By the end of 2023, the bad image presented by the Phytideio Sports Center GSO will be a thing of the past, the renovation works of which started today, in the presence of the Limassol Municipal Authorities and the leadership of the KOA.
The Mayor of Limassol, Nikos Nikolaidis and the President of KOA, Andreas Michailidis, together with collaborators, architects and contractors of the project, were found this morning at the historic site of GSO, which for years was useless and was a source of dirt and delinquency.
“Finally, today the works of the first phase of the renovation of the Phytideio Sports Center GSO begin and I want to express my satisfaction and at the same time, the recognition that they should start a long time ago”, said in statements of Mr. Nikolaidis.
The Mayor of Limassol noted that the goal is to upgrade the quality of life of the citizens and to transform the historic sports center into a place of socialization and sports, both for the citizens themselves and for the students of TEPAK, as part of it will be used for sports needs of the University.
The first phase of the project, costing 570 thousand euros, continued, provides for the renovation of the existing courts – two mini football courts and a basketball, tennis and volleyball court – as well as its configuration He noted that by the end of May, the first phase will be delivered, so that the space can be used by TEPAK students and citizens, while the second phase is expected to be offered before the summer. and will include building infrastructure.
Specifically, he continued, it will concern the closed exercise areas for TEPAK, the museum of sports history GSO, which will be a completely new building as well as the upgrade of the restaurant and the refreshment room, for which the Municipality will come out in open offers, for their reopening.
Phase B projects are expected to begin in the fall and the entire project will be completed by the end of 2023, with a total of 1.5m euros in state funding.
In his statements, the Mayor of Limassol also explained the reasons why he considers that this new attempt to reopen the space will not have the failure of the previous one.
“The key to the successful reopening of the space here is the coexistence of TEPAK together with the Municipality, the utilization of the existing synergies, the creation of sports programs of TEPAK, which will be utilized for the citizens, at different times and in different conditions, the addition of the sports museum, which will make it a place to visit and the successful operation of the catering infrastructure “, he said.
Through the necessary synergies of the Municipality of Limassol with TEPAK and KOA, which is the owner of the space, We believe that this space “has every reason to succeed and function properly”, concluded Nikos Nikolaidis in his statement.
For his part, the President of the COM welcomed the start of work, noting that he felt ashamed every time he passed by the spot and saw the image in which the historic GSO had fallen.
“It is a day of joy for us, as owners”, said Andreas Michailidis, who wished, ” the students of TEPAK but also the citizens to use the space properly, but also to respect it, because previously there was not this necessary respect “.
He pointed out that the necessary security measures will be taken, with guards and the installation of a closed circuit monitoring, “so that the space is maintained as it will be delivered”.
