“Deputy” President of DISY and former Minister of Finance, Haris Georgiadis, described the situation for the resumption of talks in the Cyprus issue as “bad”.
Speaking to “POLITI 107.6” and the show Morning Inspection, Mr. Georgiadis said that this characterization is due to the attitude shown by Turkey in Cyprus and the Aegean lately, noting, however, that this does not mean that we should not seek dialogue at all times “. “It is for this reason that I have expressed the view that the non-solution of the Cyprus problem is the most probable possibility,” he added.
Asked what he proposes in case of a new impasse, Mr. Georgiadis said that “we must prepare for the management of the possible non-solution”. He also said that there was no reason to be optimistic. “It will not be easy to manage,” he said, adding that “we will always find some things in front of us, such as illegal immigration from the occupied territories.”
He proposed the implementation of specific measures before the “final solution” concerning trade, transport, withdrawal of troops, the return of Famagusta and Morphou, but also the implementation of the European acquis throughout the territory.
Concluding, Mr. Georgiadis said that “there are not many options for Cypriot Hellenism” and stressed that “we must be ready to share sovereignty.”
