Yellow warning for severe thunderstorms

A Yellow Warning has been issued by the Department of Meteorology, for a combination of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The warning is in effect starting tomorrow Thursday at 6:00 and will last until 6:00 Friday morning.

The weather forecast 

Barometric low with center the Aegean, gradually moves southeast and begins to affect the region.

Tonight, the weather will remain mainly cloudy at times and isolated showers are expected initially. Later, however, local rain and isolated storms are expected, mainly in the west. Snow or sleet will fall on the highest peaks of Troodos and locally in the highest mountains. Winds will be southeast to south, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort but to the west and locally to the north, moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be slightly rough to rough and locally rough in the west. The temperature will drop to 8 degrees in the interior, around 11 on the southern and eastern coasts, around 14 on the rest of the coast and 4 degrees in the higher mountains, where locally frost is expected to form.

Tomorrow, the weather will be mostly cloudy with localized showers and isolated thunderstorms, as well as snow or sleet in the higher mountains. Winds will be mainly southeast, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort, but transient locally to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be slightly rough to rough and locally rough in the west. The temperature will rise to 15 degrees in the interior, around 17 degrees on the coasts and 6 degrees in the higher mountains.

Tomorrow night the weather will remain mostly cloudy with isolated showers or even thunderstorms, mainly on the coasts. In the higher mountains, snow or sleet may fall. Winds will be mainly northeast to east, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will be a little rough and locally in the west up to rough.

On Friday and Saturday, the weather will be mostly cloudy and local rains are expected at intervals, without excluding an isolated storm, as well as snow or sleet in the higher mountains. The temperature is not expected to change appreciably, and will remain close to the average climatic values.

On Sunday, the weather will be mostly cloudy and local showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected. Snow or sleet will fall on the highest peaks of Troodos and locally in the highest mountains. The temperature will rise slightly and will be near or slightly above the average climatic values.

Limited visibility on the highway 

Due to torrential rain in the area of ​​the Limassol – Nicosia highway, from Governor's Beach to Limassol, visibility is limited.

Drivers are asked to be especially careful, drive at low speeds, keep a safe distance from the road ahead vehicles and have their vehicle's headlights on.
