Yiannis Sakellis: A Carcass

Blue Iris Art Gallery presents and invites you to the opening of the solo exhibition of visual artist Yiannis Sakellis titled “A Carcass” on Saturday, March 2 2024 at 19: 00.

Sakellis’ latest work explores the traditional perception of the female body as the epitome of beauty but focuses on its decay, essentially serving as a study of death that pertains to the general human condition.

The artworks in the exhibition engage with Charles Baudelaire’s poem “Une Charogne” (a carcass) and delve into the perspectives of the relationship between beauty and mortality.

< p>They depict the nude female body in contrasting conditions, showcasing the allure of life and the inevitable embrace of death. This contradiction challenges conventional perceptions of beauty while reflecting the full range of human experience.

Inspired by Baudelaire’s ability to discern beauty even amidst decay, the artist expresses the existential anxiety that accompanies the theme of death , while also reinforcing the struggle for life through the function of memory.

The juxtaposition of the skeleton with the living form/flesh invites the viewer to look beyond the initial layer of death, towards life. Through memory, the viewer is called to recognize life within and beyond death.

Opening talk by the former artistic director of Pafos2017 and current vice chairman of the organization E.C.O.C. Limassol2030 – Candidate City.

    Duration of the exhibition: 02 – 16 March 2024
