Υπ. Of Transport: At the Ministry the proposal for compulsory escort to holders of a student motorcycle license

Road safety is a priority for the Ministry of Transport and the Government in general, said the Minister of Transport, Giannis Karousos, noting that specific measures are being promoted, aimed at reducing serious and deadly road collisions.

Giannis Karousos attended the event entitled “Youth and Road Safety”, co-organized in the old port of Limassol, by the Limassol Police Department, the Traffic Department and the Limassol Road Traffic Volunteers in the old port of Limassol.

In his statements, the Minister stated that the issue of road safety is not only a priority for the Ministry and the Government “but something that I have taken as a personal matter, which is why we are promoting several actions and initiatives that will improve road safety and we support all events that have to do with its promotion “.

As a Ministry, he continued, “we have heard the messages that the people involved wanted to send us, especially the clubs and motorcycle federations, and we have received ideas and suggestions on how we can improve road safety, so improvements are being promoted.”

As an example, Mr. Karousos stated that the new budget will include a fund to subsidize the purchase of a vest – airbag for motorcyclists, “something that has been proven to save lives and we must promote it.”

In addition, he said, the amendments have been completed and the issue of the student motorcycle license will soon be taken to the Council of Ministers for approval, so that the holder can not drive without being accompanied by an instructor.

“At the same time, we are promoting some projects in the road network, which will significantly improve road safety, such as in Omonia Avenue, in Limassol, where we must create a dividing island, or in other road networks that have a problem in Cyprus and we must take measures. He added.

He also recalled the recent launch of the photo-marking system “whose aim is to improve road safety, reduce road collisions and not complaints”.

“The points where the installation of this system will take place have been selected by the Police and the Road Safety Unit of the Ministry of Transport after analyzing the black spots of the road network”, said Mr. Karousos and expressed the certainty that with the operation of other traffic light points will significantly reduce road collisions.

Asked how children can receive the right messages on the subject of road safety, the Minister of Transport said that this is done through such events “because as you can see, motorcycle clubs and volunteers of all ages are participating”.
