The first step towards the creation of a Metropolitan-Periurban Park of greater Limassol, which has been discussed for years, was made with the first public presentation of the preliminary spatial planning study.

According to an announcement by the Municipality Limassol Mayor Nikos Nicolaidis and other speakers underlined the need for immediate changes in order for Limassol to avoid the unpleasant consequences of climate change, rising temperatures and desertification.

As mentioned during the presentation, objective criteria for evaluating and classifying spatial information were adopted for the zoning of the park, leading to the preparation of a decision-making tool. This tool, it is added, formed the basis for the categorization of the proposed development sites of the park, which took into account the immediate need to create a space of high ecological quality with a catalytic contribution to the environmental upgrading of Greater Limassol.

< p>It is noted that it is not a single green space, but a network of urban and peri-urban green spaces, with a relationship of coherence and interdependence between them, that is, the green areas (of any size) will be connected to each other to create a large metropolitan park.< /p>

The location of the Park covers the areas of the Municipalities of Limassol, Mesa Geitonia, Germasogeia, Agios Athanasios, Kato Polemidia and Ypsonas and according to the researchers, this fact ensures the expansion of the park throughout the entire spread of greater Limassol , reinforcing at the same time the concept of the metropolitan space and the potential universal use by all citizens of Greater Limassol.

The study was assigned to a group of researchers under the Environmental Manager Dr Nicolas Iliadis and for its preparation they were taken into account the guidelines and provisions from the existing local plan of Limassol (2011) and the strategic study of sustainable development of greater Limassol y, “Integrated Limassol Development”.
