Averoff to industrialists: Solutions to the problem of labor shortages will be provided

The problems faced by the sectors of the economy and especially the lack of manpower, prove that the local economy is doing very well, said today the President of DISY, Averof Neophytou, adding that the Government will launch solutions.

Mr. Neophytou visited, in the morning, the industrial area of Ypsonas, where he talked to industrialists about the issues that concern them and which, as he said, focus on the lack of manpower and the lack of space to expand their facilities.

“I encounter these two problems in all sectors of the economy that I visit and it is a proof that the local economy is doing very well,” he noted, while reiterating his confidence that the economic growth of 2021 will be much stronger than the recession of 2020.

At the same time, he stressed that we must find a way to solve the problem of labor shortages, since “we can not strangle the potential of the economy.”

“For years from 2013 until 2018 we had an unemployment problem and we experienced unemployment that reached 2012-13, almost 20%, while today we have the opposite problem”, he said and added that “the hotelier does not find, the hotel does not find the industrialist, the farmer, the stockbreeder, does not find any sector of the economy, restaurants, in the retail trade, people to be able to serve its customers, the market “.

He announced that he will have meetings with the Minister of Labor and is in contact with both the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Interior, expressing his confidence in the Government to resolve the issue.

He added, “Both with the Minister of Commerce and with the competent bodies, we must find a way to satisfy the very successful industrial units, those that have the possibility of even export trade”.

“Better to have these problems than when, years ago, I visited industries, various sectors of the economy, with people feeling that they would not make it, because they did not have jobs, there was no demand from the market,” he added.

Remarking that many choose not to work since they are recipients of the EU, the President of DISY said that this allowance was necessary and was an important social reform, which gave a safety net to tens of thousands of our fellow citizens “who did not have a bed ».

Certainly, he continued, every system should be re-evaluated and pointed out that, on the one hand, social support programs should not be stopped, but on the other hand, “we must be sure that any program of the Government is not being exploited”.

“That's why safety valves need to be put in, and if there are jobs and someone refuses to go to work, I think the state needs to adjust its policies,” he said.

Answering a question whether young people should turn their attention to different from the traditional sectors of the economy, Averof Neophytou stated that he understands every parent who wants to rehabilitate his child and wants a job in the public sector or a very good job in the private sector.

“In normal countries the average salary is much higher than the average salary in the public sector, so in this we have to make our country normal and by that I do not imply that the earnings in the public sector should be reduced, I make it clear,” he said.

He also added that the state should support and give opportunities to young people “these brilliant minds”, to create their own business, because in an economy we do not need to be all employees “.
