“Prison, death or victory”
Brazil's far-right president Zaich Bolsonaro said on Saturday (August 28th) that he saw three alternatives for his near future: “Go to jail, be killed or win” in next year's presidential election.
“There are three alternatives for my future: to arrest me, to kill me or to defeat me. Rest assured that the first alternative is not going to happen. “I am doing the right thing and I do not owe anything to anyone,” said Bolsonaro, who is seeking re-election in the 2022 presidential election.
In a context of tensions with the judiciary, the Brazilian president has once again attacked the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) and warned: “There is no man on earth who will intimidate me.”
Bolsonaro suffered a defeat on Wednesday as Brazilian Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco rejected a motion to prosecute Alessandre de Moraes, one of the STF's 11 judges and a member of the TSE.
The controversy began several months ago, in particular over Bolsonaro's questioning of the legitimacy of Brazil's e-voting system, which has been in place since 1996.
“Buy a rifle”
The Supreme Court has launched several investigations against the head of state.
Earlier this month, Judge Moraes ordered an investigation into the president for “slander” and “incitement to crime”.
The Supreme Court also included the president in an investigation launched in 2019 by the STF into offenses and threats against several of its judges.
On Friday, before heading to Goiania, the country's far-right president encouraged the population to arm themselves: “Everyone has to buy a rifle. “An armed people will never be enslaved,” he said.
On Saturday morning, in the state capital of Goya, the president walked without wearing a face mask among a crowd of supporters outside a temple, according to images posted on social media.
