Strategic Agenda and names for institutional leadership at the dinner of 27 – The heads of the EU's top institutions are decided at the leaders' dinner – Reference to Cyprus and Hezbollah threats in the conclusions

Around 20:30 the dinner of the 27 startedof heads of state and government of the European Union in Brussels, to discuss amendments to the Strategic Agenda for the period 2024 – 2029 and the package of names for the leadership of the institutions of the European Union, two issues which should be agreed together as they are directly linked to the priorities of the next institutional cycle.

Previously, the leaders closed discussions on conclusions on Ukraine and defense and security quite quickly, while on the Middle East there was a more extensive discussion on the issue of recognizing the Palestinian Authority. The European leaders finally agreed as recorded in the conclusions that the recognition of a state is a national competence.

In the framework of the conclusions on the Middle East, according to information broadcast by the Cyprus News Agency, added referencewhich indirectly refers to Hezbollah's threats against the Republic of Cyprus.

Specifically, the text states that the European Council condemns in the strongest possible way any threat against member states > of the European Union which contributes to the escalation. Also, the text confirms the solidarity of the European Council with the member states.

As part of the debate on the Strategic Agenda that started before the dinner, Germany and France tabled a series of amendments according to a competent EU source for a series from issues including climate change, EU competitiveness, and defense and security issues.

The Strategic Agenda is part of the same discussion as the institutional leadership package, noted same source, and therefore it is not excluded that there will have to be an agreement on the text before the leaders are called upon to lock the names, barring the unexpected, of von der Leyen, Antonio Costa and Kaya Kalas.
