“Inflated” are the electricity bills that citizens receive, with the press representative of the EAC, Christina Papadopoulou, speaking of a very difficult situation. Speaking on ALPHA's program “Alpha Kalimera”, he explained that energy prices in Cyprus are high because the cost of fuel and the cost of purchasing greenhouse gas rights are at extremely high levels. “These two account for about 70% of the electricity bill we receive. Only when their prices are reduced will the bill also be reduced,” he clarified.

According to the representative of EAC, a kilowatt hour costs 29 cents, so an 800 kilowatt hour bill will amount to approximately 236 euros for two months. In fact, it is noteworthy that compared to last year, the bills have increased by 17%, with this development also attributed to the increase in the price of oil, which is a result of the war situation in Ukraine. Mrs. Papadopoulou noted at the same time that the bills also include increased consumption because they concern the period of January, February and early March, months when it is quite cold.

The beneficiaries of the Special Pricing

Ms. Papadopoulou also referred to the Special Pricing which offers approximately a 20% reduced bill . As he said, the beneficiaries amount to around 34,000, however the response is reduced, as only half have joined the specific pricing.

The beneficiaries are:

  • Families with three dependent minors children based on defined income criteria, i.e. the annual gross income does not exceed 51,000 euros
  • Recipients of public assistance
  • Beneficiaries of the Minimum Guaranteed Income
  • The recipients of severe motor disability allowance
  • Recipients of care allowance for quadriplegics and paraplegics
  • People with multiple sclerosis
  • Persons on hemodialysis and receiving mobility allowance
