Today marks 20 years since the Strategic Partnership Agreement between the EU and the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, while in Cyprus this cooperation has been important for peace, as it states the UNDP Cyprus.

According to a post on the “X” of UNDP Cyprus,“as of today, in 2004, the Strategic Partnership Agreement between the EU and UNDP was signed, which laid the foundations for cooperation. In Cyprus since 2001, this cooperation has been vital for the cultivation of peace”.

“The EU's cooperation with UNDP has been vital for cultivating peace, safeguarding Cyprus' rich cultural heritage and supporting economic development,” Judit Rozsa, Deputy Director General of the European Commission's DG Structural Reforms, said in a video.

< p>On behalf of UNDP, Nick Hartmann, Deputy Regional Director of the Office for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, said that UNDP and the EU are officially celebrating the 20th anniversary of their global partnership this year.

The video he refers to the Nicosia Single Master Plan, which he notes was developed by a group of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in the 1980s and since 2001 with the support of the EU. It was the first, he says, bi-communal project to prepare a joint planning strategy for the city of Nicosia.

“The success of the EU partnership – UNDP could not have been possible without the important work of the bi-communal technical committees, the technical committees on cultural heritage, on culture, on health, on the environment, on crossings, the committee on missing persons” the video reads, which also lists more examples of this cooperation in Cyprus.
