    A total of five elderly personsare currently hospitalized at the Nicosia General Hospital with heat shock, the representative of OKYPY, Charalambos Harilaou, told the Cyprus News Agency, noting that the situation their health is stable and they are expected to be discharged in the next few days.

    As Mr. Harilaou reported to the Cyprus News Agency, in recent days due to the high temperatures in Cyprus, an increased number of people with symptoms of heat exhaustion have been seen in the Emergency Departments (EDs) of public hospitals.

    According to Mr. Harilaou, some people had to be hospitalized, while the rest of the cases were treated and these people were discharged.

    Today, he said, five cases of heat stroke are being treated at the Nicosia General Hospital, with the health status of these individuals being stable.

    He also mentioned that the five incidents concern elderly people with co-morbidities and chronic diseases, and that these people belong to vulnerable groups.

    It is recalled that the day before yesterday the first death from heat stroke was recorded, concerning a 91-year-old woman, who was taken to the hospital by ambulance from her home, with symptoms of high fever.

    As Mr. Charilaou mentioned, “upon her arrival at TAEP she suffered a cardiac arrest. The doctors and nurses managed to revive her, but in a few minutes she had a second seizure, she didn't make it and she died,” he added.

    Mr Harilaou advised caution to the public and especially to the elderly belonging to vulnerable groups.

    “We must stay in our homes in an air-conditioned space, be dressed lightly and take enough fluids, especially the elderly and people belonging to vulnerable groups” , he reported.
