Frances Haugen to testify before Facebook's committee on Facebook practices

The negative effects of big tech products and practices on users, and how European Union digital regulations can address the issues that will arise, will be discussed on Monday 8 November with MEPs Frances Haugen, who became known for her complaints against Facebook.

The hearing, in which Mrs Haugen will take part, is organized by the European Parliament's Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee (IMCO), in cooperation with the Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE), Legal Affairs (JURI) and Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) as well as the Special Committees on Misinformation and Artificial Intelligence.

The hearing, which will be broadcast live on the European Parliament's website, will take place on Monday 8 November at 17:45 – 20:30 Cyprus time.

According to a statement, issues related to internet security and the need for transparency regarding algorithms will also be discussed during the hearing, in connection with the Commission's proposal for new legislation on digital services (Digital Services Act).

The Internal Market Committee is currently examining the Commission proposal, which was tabled in December 2020, before tabling changes and amendments.

The bill aims to create a more secure digital environment where users' rights are protected, and will include, among other things, regulations to crack down on illegal content on the Internet, enhance accountability and transparency in relation to algorithms, and in relation to website content management and targeted advertising.
