With the imposition of a two-year prison sentence, the curtain fell on the traffic accident that resulted in the death of 19-year-old Marilena Perikleous. The traffic accident happened on July 10, 2020 at 10:50 p.m. on Platron street in Limassol, with the unfortunate Marilena losing her life five days later, on July 15.
The defendant did not admit the charges and complied with the right to remain silent. In the process, prosecution witnesses, eyewitnesses, who were judged by the Court to be reliable, were called and testified.
The trial of the fatal case before the District Court of Limassol began a few months ago, while the delay was due to the fact that the accused was absent abroad. During the reading of the decision, the Judge noted, among other things, that the remorse of the accused, as stated by his lawyer, is of no importance since he denied the charges and cannot benefit from the reduction of his sentence.
It is noted that, a driver's license was suspended for three months after release and 10 penalty points.
What happened
According to the facts, the car accident occurred at 10:50 p.m. on the evening of July 10, 2020, on the Limassol-Platron road, when the car driven by the then 21-year-old man with two 19-year-old women as passengers collided head-on with a car driven by the defendant, who at that time was attempting to overtake is prohibited and there is a continuous line. Resulting in a collision with the other vehicle.
The unfortunate Marilena Perikleous, who was sitting in the back seats, was taken to the Nicosia Hospital where she underwent surgery. Eventually, she succumbed to her injuries, later.
With her death, the unfortunate Marilena gave life to three patients as her family performed an act of altruism and humanity, after being informed by the treating doctors that the child could not be saved, she made the brave decision to donate her organs.
