These are the most enchanting destinations to visit in May
Top 7 destinations to travel to May
The June rains have not yet hit the Himalayas and the skies are usually blue without fog. The trails from Namche to Base Camp will be quite busy during May, so take the Annapurna Circuit seriously. May is also Buddha's birthday month, and you'll be hard-pressed to avoid the street dancing and celebrations that erupt all over Nepal. Our advice? If you like partying, head to Bhaktapur or Patan.
Greece in May is not so different from summer. If you want to go to enjoy the sun and the beaches but also to get a tan, we recommend you to visit in June or August when the weather is suitable. But if you prefer to visit, for example, Crete, Santorini, Athens and the Parthenon without tourist hordes, May is ideal. The temperature usually hovers around 21°C – perfect for strolling the old streets of Delos or haggling at a Mykonos market. There's also the Corfu Beach Festival, May Day and the annual Rhodes Flower Festival, an explosion of color that takes over the island for a few weeks at the end of the month.
Like its Greek cousin, Italy is packed with tourists in the summer (June-August). But May is where you'll find the savvy travelers. The crowds have dropped (no five-hour queues for St Peter's Basilica), flowers colonize every available windowsill and the temperature is ideal for sightseeing with the thermostat set at 25°C. There can be a few showers at the start of the month, but travel from mid-May and you're almost guaranteed warm days and cool nights.
Head to Tuscany for calmer climes and visit Florence for the annual Festa del Grillo at Cascine or nibble on fava beans, tomatoes and seasonal strawberries at a Monti street café in Rome.
