Letter from the Secretary General of K.E. of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanos to the President of the Republic – “It is an insult to democracy and its defenders not to mention the coup”

A letter to the President of the Republic was sent by the General Secretary of the KE of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou on the occasion of the Ministry's circular of Education for the actions in schools in relation to the 50 years since the Turkish invasion and from which, as he states, the role of the coup is absent.

Stefanos Stefanou calls on the President of the Republic to take a position on the issue, while noting that the role of the coup in the tragedy of 1974 should not be absent from such events that the government may organize, or even worse, deleted.

< p>The letter from the General Secretary of the AKEL Central Committee to the President of the Republic is quoted in full:

“On the occasion of the circular of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, entitled “Actions for the sad anniversary of the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion”, in which the role of the coup in the disaster of 1974 is absent, a completely unacceptable fact, please let me know whether you adopt the content of the circular in question.

On this occasion, please also inform me about the plans – if and as long as they exist – of the government to organize and promotion of events and initiatives on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the twin crime of the treacherous coup and the barbaric Turkish invasion.

AKEL strongly believes that the government should set clearly the political context of the events and initiatives that it may intend to organize, from which context it clearly should not be absent or even worse the role of the coup in the tragedy of 1974 should be deleted, which would constitute a falsification of the historical truth and an insult to the democracy itself and the struggles of our people to defend it”.
