The progress of the implementation of the Recovery Plan for the revitalization of the city within the walls was presented

The contribution of the Cyprus Recovery and Resilience Plan to the realization of the vision of the Municipality of Nicosia for the revitalization of the city within the walls were presented on Friday, December 2, 2022, in the context of the 1st Annual Event co-organized by the Republic of Cyprus and the Delegation of the European Commission to Cyprus, in the presence of the President of the Republic and the European Health and Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakidou.

An announcement by the Municipality of Nicosia stated that municipal councilor Eleni Loukaidou gave an impression of the overall philosophy of the major development projects that have been implemented in recent years in the capital of the country, noting that within the walls is the geographical and administrative center of the Republic of Cyprus.

“Abandoning the area would be an indirect admission of the facts of the invasion and occupation”, he said and added that the Municipality of Nicosia will continue the effort, with the same enthusiasm and dynamism and hopes that all of the above will be a pole of attraction for more entrepreneurs , who will see the perspective and proceed with investments, which will strengthen the dynamics within the walled city.

The projects implemented in Nicosia within the framework of the Plan were presented to the visitors at the Multifunctional Municipal Center of Nicosia.  

Specifically, the two properties were presented, one on Aristidou Street and a building complex at the junction of Voulgaroktonou-Arsinois-Komninos Streets, which were purchased and will be converted into student rooms with funding of a total amount of 6.9 million euros secured by the Recovery Plan and Durability. Also, reference was made to the anti-flood projects with a total of seven construction contracts.   

Reference was also made to the renovation project of the school in Faneromeni, to house the School of Architecture of the University of Cyprus.

Also presented were the projects that have already been completed, are in progress, are being completed and are expected to be announced with co-financing from the European Structural Investment Funds, the State Budget and the Municipality of Nicosia within the framework of the Integrated Strategy for Sustainable Urban Development, which are part of the wider planning of Nicosia Municipality to revitalize the city in a modern and safe environment, which will be a pole of attraction for visitors, entrepreneurs and new investors.

These include Eleftherias Square, a a large number of renovations and restoration of buildings and of facades in the areas of Chrysaliniotissa, Takht El Kale, Old Town Hall area, Faneromeni Square, Ledra and Onasagorou pedestrian streets and three new buildings that were purchased and renovated in order to host social programs under the management of the Nicosia Multipurpose Municipal Center.

The presentation was concluded with adv opium tour of projects and interventions that fall under the Recovery and Resilience Plan.
