Technopolis group undertook the preparation of the study for the update of the CEE
The Smart Specialization Strategy (SES) for Cyprus, for the period 2023-2030, was approved by the Council of Ministers, in its session on March 30, 2023, following a proposal by the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Mr. Filippos Hatzizacharias. The SEE identifies and analyzes the priority sectors where Cyprus has a competitive advantage and can be foci of economic development and improve the quality of life of citizens, through investments in Research and Innovation (R&I). The SEE is part of the national R&D Strategy of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy (YEKPSP), which is in its final stages of preparation, and is an ex-ante conditionality for the utilization of the resources from the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) in the R&D sector.
The preparation of a study for the updating of the SEE was undertaken by the Technopolis group. The study was based on horizontal and sectoral policies, initiatives and programmes, at national and European level and on the potential, needs and challenges of the domestic R&D ecosystem. In addition, the opinions and suggestions of the stakeholders of the E&K ecosystem were taken into account. The results of the study were evaluated and approved by the YEKPSP.
The priority sectors that have emerged through the SEE for the period 2023-2030 are divided into four sections, as follows:
- Section A – Technological priority areas: include Digital Technologies and Innovative Materials
- Section B – Ecosystems: include the areas of Agri-Food, Shipping and Renewable Energy .
- Section C – Emerging priorities/ecosystems (Emerging ecosystems): currently only include the Space sector
- Section D – Catalyst sectors (Enablers): include the Health sectors and the Environment
