EQUALITY: Distorting the reality of what happens in Prisons

ΙΣΟΤΗΤΑ: Δια στρεβλωση της πραγματικoτητας and gamma; /></p> <p> <strong>A statement was issued by the Branch Council of Prison Guards of the All-Cypriot Union Equality regarding the revelations about the Central Prisons.</strong></p> <p>In the announcement it states that «The Prison Branch of the Pan-Cypriot Union Equality, since its establishment,  he was trying to bring to the surface, for everyone to know, the problems facing the Central Prisons, precisely so that they could be solved. These problems were brought to the attention of both the Directorate of the Department of Prisons (DTP) and the Ministry of Justice and Public Order (YDTT).</p> <p>With its announcement, the PASYDY Personnel Branch is attempting to distort reality, since clearly the largest share of responsibility for the current breakdown of the Central Prisons and for the fact that fellow Prison Guards are working under a regime of fear is borne by the DTP, which also bears the responsibility for the orderly operation of these, and secondarily the YDTT, which was supposed to exercise effective supervision at the PTO.</p> <p> The PTO instead of seeking close cooperation with the staff to solve the problems, proceeded to silence the problems of the Prisons and promoted a false and distorted image that everything is rosy.</p> <p>In a meeting we had on 12/9/2019 with the then Minister of Justice and Public Order (and current Attorney General of the Republic), Mr. Giorgos Savvidis, with a document entitled "Problems faced by Prison Department Wardens" we had brought to his attention a series of serious problems we were facing. Listed below are the main five of them:</p> <p>"1. There is no communication with the Directorate of the Prisons Department, despite sending a number of letters to arrange a meeting and despite its obligations arising from a series of legislations to communicate with the representatives of workers.</p> <p> 2. The Directorate of the Prisons Department fails to confidentially and confidentially handle reports by prison guards about inmate misconduct, resulting in prison guards receiving threats. There have also been 21 incidents of prison guards being beaten and their vehicles set on fire since the current Director took over…</p> <p>3. Complete absence of protocols/procedures for dealing with fires or riots or incidents of violence or injury to guards or handling vulnerable (psychologically or otherwise) prisoners and complete lack of proper staff training and education. Also, based on recent publications and reports, regarding the existence of a homosexual couple living in the same cell, in the event that a prison guard, while on duty, is confronted with the sexual affairs of said couple, what will he do? How will he handle it?</p> <p> 4. There are a number of violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Acts 1996 to 2015, for which complaints are pending with the Department of Labor Inspection …. A Health Committee has never been elected in the manner determined by the relevant legislation.</p> <p> 5. There is no rotation of personnel in the various posts. Those who are considered “attractive”, due to the nature of their duties, are assigned to people around the Directorate and are used for reward or punishment. Also, only those who did not do anything to annoy the Management, such as, for example, use sick leave, are allowed to work overtime.
