Altamira to the Prosecutor's Office for instructions

The police investigation team “tied” the first cases for the collapse of the Co-operation. Two years after the Co-operation Investigation Committee concluded, police sent three cases to the Legal Service for further instructions on how to handle them.

These are the cases concerning the Cooperation agreement with Altamira, which undertook the management of non-performing loans, the provision of credit facilities by several cooperative credit companies and the corporate cards. The Deputy Chief of Police, Christos Mavris, reported yesterday on the course of the investigations to the parliamentary Control Committee.

The representative of the Legal Service stated that the service will examine the evidence material provided by the investigators and then they will be given instructions for handling the cases.

Despite informing the members of the Audit Committee about the progress of the police investigations, opposition MPs denounced an attempt to cover up the case, as well as involvement in the work of the investigations, trying to highlight the issue as political. AKEL and DIKO questioned whether the former Minister of Finance Haris Georgiadis, the former General Manager of the Cooperative Cyprus Bank Nikolas Hatzigianni and the then Strategic Director of the Cooperative Giannis Stavrinidis were summoned for questioning by the police.

The head of the investigations, Christoforos Mavrommatis, refused to answer whether testimonies were taken from the specific persons. As he said, the case should be seen first by the Attorney General.
