By the end of the year, the completion of the new Hemodialysis Unit of the Paphos General Hospital is expected to be completed, which is being built next to the chapel of the Hospital and is an extension of the state hospital, according to Dr. Laki Gioukka, Director of the Nephrology Clinic of Paphos Hospital.
Dr. Gioukas noted that the construction of the new Hemodialysis Unit of the Paphos General Hospital is based on European standards and has the ability to develop up to 25 hemodialysis stations depending on the needs of the Paphos District. Apart from, he said, from the normal Hemodialysis Unit, the new Unit will have a separate Hemodialysis Unit for HIV-positive patients (hepatitis B carriers) the so-called yellow unit which today, as he said, they do not have, and patients from Paphos go three times week in Nicosia and undergo dialysis.
In addition, he mentioned that care was taken for the construction of a separate Unit for infectious diseases such as e.g. Covid – 19. The building, as he mentioned, will house the outpatient nephrology clinics, will have a Short-Term Care Unit, will have a chamber for minor surgeries and there will be a chamber for peritoneal dialysis which is another type of treatment to restore kidney function. The needs of Paphos District with this Unit are guaranteed for at least 15 years based on the planning done.
Indicatively, he said that on the ground floor of the building will be created a comfortable area for the reception and registration of patients, examination rooms/clinics, four short-term hemodialysis stations, two yellow-dialysis stations for people with infectious diseases (Yellow Unit) with separate discreet entrance, locker rooms and staff locker rooms. . He also continued, on the first floor will be created 25 hospital stations, locker rooms and a sitting room for patients and auxiliary rooms, while on the second floor will be created a rest room of the doctor on duty and other areas. The entire building is designed for easy access for people with disabilities. The aim of the project, he continued, which was announced by the President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis, is the solution of the chronic problems faced by the dialysis patients of Paphos District and it is expected that with this project the suffering to which the suffering citizens are subject will disappear. p>
Asked about this, Dr. Gioukas stated that at the moment the Dialysis Unit of the General Hospital of Paphos serves 60 patients who undergo dialysis three times a week. At the heart of the design of the new Unit, he added, is the provision to patients of high quality care, in a modern and well-studied environment.
In addition, Dr. Yukkas said the main cause of kidney failure is diabetes, which has now become a pandemic. He also said that half of the patients undergoing dialysis are diabetics. He added that the second cause is hypertension, which also damages the kidneys and the third cause is heredity. He also referred to cystic spinal cord disease, which he said was an inherited disease found only in Paphos.
What Public Works Say
The head of the project of the new Hemodialysis Unit of the General Hospital of Paphos is Eva Iordanous from the Public Works of Nicosia and the Inspector of construction sites Marinos Kostas from the Public Works of Paphos. According to the Contract, said Mr. Costa, the Contractor has studied and will complete the construction works within 18 months from their start, while after the completion of the works he will be responsible for the Maintenance of the Project for a period of 12 years./p>
