Cataract patients expect - unknown for how long - justification, one year after surgery

A year after the incident with the patients who underwent cataract surgery in a private hospital in Nicosia, with the result that five of them lost their eyesight and others lost their sight, the file was forwarded yesterday to the Attorney General George Savvidis. The aim is to study the evidence collected by the authorities and to prosecute those allegedly responsible for the serious effects on the health of patients, some of whom have died of other causes. The relatives of the eight patients are waiting for answers and are demanding responsibility for the suffering suffered by their own people.

According to the assistant head of TAE Nicosia and head of the investigation team Ioannis Giorkatzis, the investigation of the case began in October 2020, after a relative patient complained, while the volume of data is such that it is included in seven box files. Regarding the reasons for the delay in sending the file to the Legal Service, he stressed that there were specialized examinations and specialized testimonies that had to be obtained, which delayed the completion of the investigations. Mr. Giorkatzis also stressed that the file is sent with specific suggestions to the Legal Service, which has the last word after the study of the investigative material. Investigators worked with the Ministry of Health and Labor to issue their own findings on this serious case.
