A three-month-old baby defeated the new coronavirus and was discharged after remaining in the intensive care unit for 70 days, the hospital where he was being treated announced.
“Petrou is a rare case” of a serious infection by Covid-19 in such a small child, explained the Vita 9 de Oktubre hospital in Valencia.
The baby was born in October and was infected at home by his older sister who was asymptomatic. He was only 9 days old when he was admitted to the hospital for treatment. From the first moment he had respiratory problems and had difficulty feeding. For this he was immediately transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit.
In the 70 days that his hospital stay lasted, his parents could only see him through a tablet, until the test for the new coronavirus finally came out negative.
In a video taken by the hospital staff, Petrou returns home with his parents, applauded by staff, nurses and doctors.
Serious symptoms of Covid-19 occur mainly in the elderly. In Spain, 66% of people who died from the new coronavirus from May to January were at least 80 years old, according to data from the Carlos DG Institute of Public Health.
Only twelve children under the age of 2 have died, out of 21,382 in this age group infected with Covid-19 during the same period.
