The European Union is pushing for a ban on Russian oil imports by the end of the year, two EU diplomats said after talks between the European Commission and EU member states at the weekend, Reuters reported.

The European Union is preparing a sixth package of sanctions against Russia for invading Ukraine. The package is expected to target Russian oil, Russian and Belarusian banks, as well as more individuals and companies.

EU diplomats say some EU countries have been able to end their use of oil before the end of 2022, but other, especially southern members, were concerned about the impact on prices.

Germany, one of the largest buyers of Russian oil, seemed eager to see the end of 2022, diplomats said, but countries such as Austria, Hungary, Italy and Slovakia still had reservations.
