The vast majority of employers worldwide have not yet communicated their plans for post-COVID-19 workplace, causing a potential divide with those employees looking for new, more flexible ways of working, according to research & nbsp; EY Work Reimagined Employer Survey 2021.

The survey outlined the views of more than 1,000 business leaders from nine countries and 25 industries on the impact of the pandemic on the workplace, including their perceptions of the risks and opportunities associated with hybrid work. The findings were then compared with the results of EY's earlier research, the & nbsp; EY Work Reimagined Employee Survey 2021.

The findings show that 79% of employers plan to make modest to extensive changes to allow for a higher percentage of hybrid work, which reflects the views of 90% of employees who said they wanted flexibility in when and where they work. . However, only 40% of companies have communicated these plans, increasing the chances of creating a gap with employees on critical issues such as flexibility, corporate culture and productivity.

The rest of the employers who took part in the survey are either still in the planning stage or waiting to communicate their decisions about new ways of working, which will be partially answered at the stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. in different countries around the world.

Despite the overwhelming acceptance of the importance of flexible work, the survey reveals that 35% of employers who participated in it, want all their employees to return fully to work as soon as the pandemic is over. And while some of these employers come from industries where physical presence is essential, some come from organizations that, while able to support distance learning, want it to be done live.

At the same time, 51% of employers say they want to reduce business travel after the pandemic, but 66% of employees say they want it to continue.

On important issues related to corporate culture and productivity, the survey identifies significant differences between employers and employees. Nearly three-quarters (72%) of employers surveyed believe that workplace culture has improved since the outbreak of the pandemic and then, compared with 48% of employees who said the same. Also, 82% of employers believe that productivity can now be measured from anywhere, as opposed to 67% of employees.

Dangers on the horizon

Employers who responded to the survey were also asked about the risks – in addition to mental health – that they believe in turning to hybrid work. Nearly half (45%) stated that one of the biggest risks is their ability to create a sense of fairness and equal treatment among employees, while some processes require a fixed program or location to handle them, thus creating a role-based “haves and don'ts” dynamics. 43% say that retaining talent and being able to offer flexible ways of working are their main concerns, while 40% cite hybrid work as a threat to culture, creativity and collaboration.

Other risks include developing the next generation of talent (39%), measuring productivity (36%), upgrading skills or retraining employees (upskilling/reskilling) new ways of working (30%), adopting new technologies to support hybrid work (28%), and to support employee well-being (28%).

To make these changes work, safety in the workplace is also a major concern. The survey reveals that 43% of companies will require their staff to be fully vaccinated before returning to the office. A similar percentage (42%) intend to provide incentives for vaccination, such as, for example, paid leave for employees, always in accordance with the relevant legal provisions.

Businesses need to adapt to this new reality and provide clarity about their intentions for a seamless transition to a hybrid model that balances business and employee priorities. They also need to draw up plans to address issues such as the equitable treatment of diverse groups of workers, the development of future talent, training and retraining, and the measurement of productivity. What is at stake is nothing less than attracting and retaining the best talent. “
