We took timely action on RCB, the nine Lebanese branches and one more case for which there is no longer any risk

“Three “haircuts” of deposits were avoided, because we took timely measures”, declares the former governor of the Central Bank, Konstantinos Herodotou, in an interview with “K”. One case was RCB, the other the nine Lebanese branches, and there was one more for which he emphasizes that there is no longer any risk. He estimates that the reduction in lending rates will begin in June, if there are no surprises regarding the figures to be given by Eurostat in May on wages in the Eurozone. He argues that the gap between lending and deposit rates will begin to narrow when the ECB begins to reduce lending, and not because of an increase in deposits. He states that he wished to remain in his position and that he informed President Christodoulidis about this in a meeting they had last December, as, as he says, a lot was achieved in the five-year period 2019-2024 and there was planning for the next one as well.

–I come from the private sector and especially abroad, as I worked in London and Paris. For a professional, nothing is taken for granted, and in the case of the position of governor of the Central Bank it is a specific term of five years.
