Ministry of Foreign Affairs: We must proceed with the publication of the Akamas Local Plan

The State and the Government must proceed with the publication of the Akamas Local Plan because we have very simply prioritized the preservation of our national park very high in our priorities, but on the other hand the granting of rights to all its owners and residents Akamas region to enjoy the benefits of such a legislative framework, said Interior Minister Nikos Nouris.

In their statements after the end of the national commemoration of the heroes of the community of Neos Chorio, Mr. Nouris stated that it is for this reason that an exhaustive dialogue has been taking place for a long time between all the involved bodies, while expressing the hope that end will find if not all, most satisfied.

What I can say is, he continued, that the Town Planning Council has done a very good job in terms of evaluating all requests. He expressed the hope that it will be possible for them to proceed with the publication of the Local Plan.

Asked about next Wednesday's meeting at the Presidential Palace with the President of the Republic, which will be attended by both him and the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, and whether the requests of community leaders will be heard for an environmental study by an independent study, Mr. Nouris noted that it is a given that they listen to all views.

The President himself is particularly sensitive, especially on the issue of Akamas, he added. Certainly, he continued, “we will hear what has to be said but what we have to say is that we should not reach an endless cycle of discussions, we should finally end up somewhere and accept that, as I said at the beginning, on the one hand “The national treasure called Akama Park and the wider Akama area should be highlighted and protected, but at the same time with great respect for both the communities and the residents.”

This is the effort, he continued, to make a reconciliation between the two and expressed the hope that through this dialogue and the studies that are done they will be able to reach the desired result.

Asked about the exchange of property and compensation, he said that everything is on the table. As the Ministry of Interior, in our part that concerns our own responsibilities, we have already submitted our own thoughts and suggestions, he added.

He also reiterated that until the end, they study all the data, and listen to all the actors. He also pointed out that with the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment they have walked Akamas and visited all the communities, they have seen all the involved bodies not once but several times “in an effort to have a complete picture of all the issues that concern the world”.
