We once wrote in our CVs with great pride that we can do multi-tasking, that is, many things at once. It was the word of the time and we promoted it as one of our important assets. It was a sign that we are productive and smart. A characteristic that would demonstrate us as hardworking employees and ideal managers, since & nbsp; we manage to have many responsibilities at the same time. “I do a lot and I benefit”, like a good multi-tool. In fact, after a period of simultaneous commitment on many fronts & nbsp; comes anxiety, stress, work stress. The stress, the mistakes, something that was forgotten and maybe some health problems and an outburst at work & nbsp; or at home. Whether you like what you do or not, stress surrounds you like a & nbsp; cloud that reduces your visibility. The reason is that you do a lot. And you do it at the same time. Now being able to concentrate has become a privilege.

A new hot word of the time is “Compartmentalization”. Put your time, your feelings, your world, your needs in “boxes”. Long story. Especially for us who live outside the box, who experience intensely our environment both spiritually and at the cellular level. Let's change the rules for a while, let's get into the “box” for a while. In terms of time management and efficiency, compartmentalization has a lot to teach us.

Your insistence on multi-tasking is a huge mistake. There is a large body of valid research proving that multi-tasking, for most people, reduces performance and potentially damages our brains. Scientist studies & nbsp; Neurologists have shown that the human brain can process only one cognitive task at a time. Fact! This is how this machine works. It is not an instrument that can evolve to think two things at once. It processes them sequentially. Do not think in parallel but in succession. Either two, or 20 or 200. Only consecutively. Even if we think we can do two automated tasks together, there are not many things that can be done properly without conscious thought and action. p>To edit a second job, the first one must stop. By switching tasks very quickly, we create the illusion that we are doing two things at once. But we pay a high cost: our concentration and memory decrease. The pace of our thinking becomes a little slower. At the same time, creativity or accuracy are reduced. Stress, frustration increase and in the end our performance decreases. Studies at Stanford University have measured the reduction in performance due to multi-tasking to 40%! The same studies suggest that continuous multi-tasking permanently reduces people's ability to concentrate on a task and allows information unrelated to our goal to compete with goal-related information. Our persistence in multi-tasking can affect our careers, our relationships and our health.

Studies at the University of London have measured the negative effects on the brain of the continuous and prolonged performance of multiple cognitive tasks simultaneously. These surveys measured a reduction in IQ of up to 15 points, identical to whether the participants in the study had not slept at night or were under the influence of substances. Studies of & nbsp; The University of Sussex found that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans in the brains of those involved in the study showed that those who tended to do multiple tasks continuously had less density in the frontal cortex, an area responsible for cognitive and emotional control. Think about it the next time you simply reply to a text message while driving: it 's like driving with an alcohol level three times the allowable limit!

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Interesting; Let's look at a practical example! It 's like trying to bake 20 steaks on a grill that can bake one steak at a time. You put the first steak to cook. The phone rings. You take it out and put another one. The second one is going to be cooked, you take it down and put a third one. Urgent email. You put the first one back, it has cooled down and the baking will now take longer overall. When you put the second one again, you forget and put the wrong sauce and you have to throw it away and start again. When you went to look for the third steak, you noticed that the dog ate it because you left it on the floor while they were in a hurry. Fortunately, you looked a little lucky because the fourth steak was cooked from its own heat and your 5th steak was baked by a friend to help you. The steaks 6 + 7 were spoiled. You are exhausted and indignant and depressed and 17 people are hungry and whining. Why did you think you could feed 20 people with such a grill?

Your reality is that you have a daily schedule full of & nbsp; meetings and you also receive & nbsp; over a hundred emails a day. In combination with dozens of phone calls for work or from a school/partner/child/friend/your mom. And you have the door to your office open. How often do you start your day with five & nbsp; things to do, that become twenty along the way and you end up doing ten, but only two from the original list? Yes, I know you. You are not unique. Not alone. But you should not tolerate it, it does not do you any good, there is a way to change it, without doing less, without having to work more hours, without having to make discounts on quality or your own need for satisfaction and joy./p>

Do you know what to do? Do you do it or do you wait for later? The reality does not change: whether we like it or not, twenty people will come to eat and if we are lucky, our little grill will not be damaged. The one who has to change his behavior is you. For a start, make a subtle change. Do it. Today. Now. And let the change be permanent, a new daily practice. Wouldn't you like to live with less stress?

CHOOSING THE LIST

Declutter your mind. Compartmentalization can help each of us positively. Why not choose something from the list below that would make you happy? Start doing it today!

1. & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; DO NOT LET YOU BE INTERRUPTED FOR A SPECIFIC DURATION

If you have something important to do that requires time and concentration, establish “quiet hours/focus time”. You may not need to start your morning routine by reading and answering emails, meeting the needs of others, and dealing with details. Resist the temptation to even & nbsp; read emails & nbsp; since it will not & nbsp; answers now. Do not open your inbox, it will distract you from your goal. If you can not do it this morning, do it during one hour of the day that you will dedicate to use your mind 100%. Do not answer phones. Put the cell phone on silent. If necessary, close the door. For as long as you can. If you can limit your email inbox to 2-3 times a day, do it.

2. & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; EVERY DAY CHOOSE A THING THAT SHOULD BE DONE

Pick a goal for today. Only one. Someone you crave or worry about all week or something important. Write it down and complete it today. You will feel great satisfaction. As soon as you wake up tomorrow morning, think gratefully of your victory today. And he chose another. Resist the temptation to have many things on your list, because it is impossible not to leave something behind. Less is more. If you work in a team, try to create a work model based on organization, focus on completing tasks sequentially and not all at once, communication and simplicity – with less multi-tasking, you will have better productivity.

< p> 3. & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; BECOME A MORE ACTIVE LISTENER

How much more productive would you be if you used more active listening during business meetings? Practice silence where you want to talk more, to give your mind time and space to process answers and solutions here and now, instead of pushing the subject for later. Please do not send emails or messages during online meetings – if it is not 100% necessary to be in a meeting, do not accept it, let us know later. Remember that your brain can process one cognitive task at a time and that IQ decreases when you multitask. Do you really want to send emails while you are in a meeting, like a child?

4. & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; & nbsp; DO NOT DEAL WITH JOBS THAT ARE NOT YET THEIR TIME

If you are going to do something tomorrow, or later and have planned the time it takes to do it right, do not do it now . Do not let it stress you out. Since it's not his time because you really do not have time today, accept that he will have to wait his turn. It is very important to clearly inform everyone involved in a job about when and how you will deal with your part, so that everyone is organized accordingly and the pressure from external factors is reduced.

It is not always easy to resist the temptation to do multi-task. Sometimes multi-tasking is necessary and inevitable. Then, just try, whatever you do, to do it consciously and give yourself time to enjoy it. The important thing is to be safe, healthy, in good spirits and present in what you choose to do at all times. I wish you good compartmentalization!
