The works for the flood protection work in the city within the walls of Nicosia begin, as well as the creation of the “green” promenade of Nicosia with the conversion of the perimeter of the walls and the Trench.
Specifically, the works for the flood protection work begin on Areos, Onisilou, Athens, Achilleos, Xanthi Xenierou streets, in the city within the walls of Nicosia.
The Municipality of Nicosia, in an announcement states that “the project, which will be executed in two phases, will have a total duration of 5 months and is expected to be completed in March 2022”.
The main goal of the project is the construction of an integrated network of rain gutters for the drainage of rainwater, which will solve the serious problems arising from the floods.
In addition, works will be carried out to replace the sewerage network, underground telecommunication networks and reconstruction of roads and sidewalks.
The construction works of the first phase of the project include Athinon and Onisilou streets and will start on November 8, 2021. Some preliminary works may start on November 1, 2021 (section of Patriarch Gregory) without any traffic obstruction.
With the completion of the first phase, the works of the second phase on Xanthis Xenierou, Areos and Achilleos streets will follow.
Soon the green walk around the walls of Nicosia
With the aim of transforming the perimeter of the walls and the Trench into the “green” promenade of Nicosia, the contracts for the construction of the project “Reconstruction of the External Perimeter Arch of the Trench – Phase A 2.2” were signed on October 25. The budget for the construction and five-year maintenance of the project amounts to € 1,233,540.00 plus VAT and the construction work is expected to last 12 months.
The project can be co-financed by the European Structural and Investment Funds.
Announcement of the Municipality of Nicosia states that the project “Reconstruction of the Outer Perimeter Arch” is part of the broader planning of the Strategy of Integrated and Sustainable Urban Development and the Area Plan of the Center of Nicosia for conversion of the perimeter of the walls and the “only wall” green “walk of Nicosia, highlighting the Venetian walls, the most important monument of international importance and landmark of the capital.
He adds that “it is an intervention for the overall sustainable regeneration of the perimeter section, from the junction of Stasinos Avenue with Eleftherias Square and Evagorou Avenue to its contribution with the opening of Kolokasis (bridge of Archbishop Makarios II), improving the increasing the attractiveness and traffic of the surrounding area of the monument “.
According to the announcement, “Phase A 2.2 of the project concerns the regeneration of the area between Eleftherias Square and Doros Loizou Square, from the border of the northern sidewalk of Stasinos Avenue to the parking lot at the level of the Trench”.
Also, “the project includes the construction of a new north sidewalk on Stasinou Avenue, with the creation of new flooring and green islands, upgrading and integration of the monument of Doros Loizos in the new pedestrian path, remodeling the garden, demolition of existing public buildings and new small public spaces information center “.
At the level of the Trench, “includes a section of bicycle path, construction of a new metal bicycle parking canopy, restoration of the existing stone culvert, as well as other works of landscaping”.
In addition, “the project includes the construction of retaining walls on the slopes between the two levels, landscaping work with new plantings and installation of new lighting.”
