Plan to install 1,000 public electric vehicle recharging points

Approved on Wednesday by the Council of Ministers, the proposal of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works for the grant scheme for the installation of 1,000 public recharging points for electric vehicles with a budget of 3.7 million euros .

As stated in a Ministry announcement, the development of electric vehicle recharging infrastructure is a necessary condition for the use of electric vehicles and is included in the objectives of the General Policy Framework for the promotion of the use of Electric Vehicles, approved by the Council of Ministers in 2021.

To achieve this goal, the Department of Electromechanical Services  has included in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, in the Policy Axis “Rapid transition to a Green Economy – Sustainable Transport”, the Grant Scheme “Electrification with 1000” to provide support for the installation of 1,000 electric vehicle recharging stations.

The Grant Scheme will be implemented in two phases (A' and B' Phase), with a total available budget of €3,700,000. Applications for Phase A will be submitted until 31/01/2023 and the amount of €1,850,000 will be allocated. Phase B is expected to be announced around the end of 2023, also with sponsorships of €1,850,000.

The potential beneficiaries are natural and legal persons (Companies, Associations, Foundations), Non-Governmental Organizations, legal persons under public law, Local Government Authorities that are owners or tenants of “parking for public use” and operate in areas under the control of Republic of Cyprus.

The eligible installation points are, among others, parking spaces for public use, municipal and community parking spaces, private parking spaces for the public, petrol station spaces, recharging station spaces, etc.

Each beneficiary may receive sponsorship for four recharging stations, per province, with a maximum number of fifteen throughout Cyprus, with the exception of local authorities who can receive sponsorship to place up to eight stations within their territory.

The Scheme provides financing at a rate of 50% of the total expenditure, with a maximum amount of financing depending on the maximum output power of the charger. Charging points that will be installed in mountainous areas will receive an increased sponsorship rate of up to 55%, with the maximum funding limits remaining as they are. implementation of another goal of the policy framework for the development of electric mobility in our country, in terms of infrastructure, that is, recharging stations.

The goal, he said, is until 2026 to install a thousand recharging stations in publicly accessible spaces and it is a program that is included in the Recovery and Resilience fund.
