WRITES: Thomas Tzortzis

We do not know where and how we park. We close boulevards for a scratch on our cars. Modified cars and motorcycles with exhausts removed, do not let us sleep at night. We do not even know what the hours of common silence are, with the result that we bother each other without missing the unnecessary tensions. From the small and largely indifferent to many of our fellow citizens, however, is judged the level of culture of our country and the degree of empathy we have. It's time to change.

The inconvenience for a parking space is daily and uninterrupted, at a time when the number of vehicles in Cyprus is increasing, and the lack of alternative ways of transportation remains a major problem. People are protesting that nothing is being done to address the issue, while the authorities respond that there are plans and forecasts and that spaces have already been built. They also refer to the wrong texts in relation to the mentality of the world. “Politis” spoke with those affected, while at the same time raising the issue with the Local Government and other competent authorities, asking for answers.

“Half salary” the parking lot

“I definitely have to search for half an hour until I find a place to park. And I can not say that I have a respectable salary every month to be able to give half of it in the parking lots “, says Maria, 28 years old, resident of Nicosia, who works in a store on Ledras Street. Stefanos, 29, a worker on Pindarou Street, estimates that cars “have increased in recent years in Cyprus” and shares his own experience, similar to those moving in the capital at rush hour: that traffic on the streets is an unbearable experience in the morning , and finding parking is often impossible. Kyprianos, 26, says he avoids public transport because the lines and stops do not cover many areas. “It is not easy to go somewhere by bus, the car is purely for the sake of time. “But, if there was a better organization, especially now with the high prices of gasoline, I would only take buses”, he states.
