    Significant labor market benefits from EU membership, says the Ministry. of Labour

    The Ministry puts forward the benefits of the implementation of the European framework, especially in aspects related to workof Labour and Social Insurance on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the accession of Cyprus to the European Union.

    “During the two decades that have intervened from 1 May 2004 until today, Cypriot citizens have benefited significantly from the impact of the European institutional framework on everyday life and especially from the aspects related to work which is at the heart of life for the overwhelming majority of citizens”, states the Ministry in today's announcement.

    As noted, the European Union has made a decisive contribution to the protection of the adequacy of wages, the free movement of workers, the recognition of professional qualifications, the balance between work and private life, transparency in information about working conditions, safety and health in the professional environment.

    In particular, it is pointed out that low-wage workers are strengthened through the National Minimum Wage established in accordance with the Adequacy of Wages Directive, citizens move freely and can work pan-European in accordance with the Directive on the Free Movement of Workers and are more protected by labor accidents that were significantly reduced, according to the European Strategy for Safety and Health at Work.

    It is also pointed out that in the EU they are recognized as qualified professionals in all European states in accordance with the Directive on the Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications, citizens are supported as new parents and receive leave from work in accordance with the Directive on Work-Life Balance and are informed in a timely, valid and detailed manner about the basic working conditions in accordance with the Directive on Transparent Employment Conditions.

    “The position of Cyprus is in Europe and the Republic of Cyprus as a member of the European Union confirms its positive prospects European course of its citizens, workers and employers, businesses and organizations”, notes the Ministry of Labour.

    It is finally stated that the human-centred government policy implemented through the implementation of the Governance Program is fully aligned with the European policy for the future of work, and the results will substantially contribute to the development of the economy and the cohesion of society, for security and stability, for progress and prosperity.
