The work of the charitable institution Telethon and the program of upcoming events that are part of the “Month of Telethon 2024”, were presented today during during a press conference the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, Association of Myopaths Cyprus and OPAP Cyprus.
This year's “Telethon Month”, takes place in a landmark year for the institution that completes 30 years of contribution to the society of Cyprus, and aims to raise public awareness, support patients with neurological and genetic diseases, as well as funding research programs by scientists and students of the Institute, whose results are directly applicable to patients.
“Through the events of humanity and love organized as part of the Telethon institution since 1994, support has been offered to thousands of our fellow human beings,” said the General Executive Director & Medical Director of ING, professor Leonidas Phylaktos, in his statements. Welcoming the representatives of the media, Mr. Phylaktos pointed out the Telethon's action over the last 30 years, noting that “the contribution of the institution is continuous, through its range of activities, informing, sensitizing the society and at the same time providing essential help to patients with neurological diseases and genetic diseases.”
Speaking about the work and activities of the ING, Mr. Phylaktos underlined the importance of the research programs carried out by the staff and students of the Institute. He also mentioned the importance of research programs dealing with the study, diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. Through ING students, the resources offered by the Telethon are used in the best possible way, always with the best interests of our patients in mind.”
Mr. Phylaktou expressed special thanks to OPAP Cyprus for its many years of support to the Telethon, as well as to all the companies supporting the institution this year. He also emphasized the importance of the continuation of the partnership between RIK and ALPHA Cyprus for the promotion of the Telethon events, as well as for the hosting of the Telemarathon from the frequency of RIK1 on Tuesday, June 11.
For his part, Mr. Panikos Voskos, President of the Association of Myopaths of Cyprus, emphasized that the main goal of the Association is to find solutions for the multiple problems faced by people with neuromuscular diseases. “The amount received by the Association from the 2023 Telethon amounted to €110,000. With this money, ventilators, oxygen, consumables and technical means were purchased to improve the daily life of our patients. In addition, costs were covered for physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, psychological and social support for individuals and their families, as well as financial support for many of our Association's families who are experiencing financial difficulties.”
On behalf of OPAP Cyprus, the General Commercial Manager, Mr. Alexandros Davos pointed out that the cooperation with Telethon has been uninterrupted since 2012, supporting our fellow human beings with neuromuscular, genetic and other related problems, demonstrating its dedication to the good of health that we are entitled to all. “Recognizing the key role of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics in the diagnosis, prevention and support of patients, OPAP Cyprus continues to function as an ally of the Cypriot society in all sectors, with a special emphasis on health”, said Mr. Davos.< /p>
The main events of TELETHON MONTH 2024:
- On Saturday, June 1st 2024 > the Telethon, in collaboration with the Strovolos Lightning Association, will hold a charitybasketball match at Kostas Papaellinas Stadium, with a start time of 11:00 am. The match will be attended by government officials and personalities from the political and business world, veteran and current basketball players, athletes of the Cyprus National Team, representatives of the media as well as artists, offering a unique spectacle for the fans of the sport. General admission for the public: 5 euros (children under 12 free). Tickets will be sold at the stadium entrance.
- On Tuesday June 11, at 21:00 in the evening, the program of RIK1 will be overflowing with love again this year, as the TELETHON Telemarathonis back with the established live marathon broadcast, with the aim of financially supporting people with myopathies, but also promoting the research programs of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics. In this effort, again this year RIK and ALPHA Cyprus are joining forces, and together they will convey the messages of the Telethon charity institution from the morning, showing information and special tributes throughout the day. In the evening, Stavros Kyprianou together with Christiana Aristotelous, will welcome the viewers, through the frequency of RIK1, in a special evening full of entertainment and strong emotions, having by their side many guests who will convey human stories that deserve our admiration, but and messages of support and hope to our fellow human beings who need it so much in the difficult times they are going through. The artistic program will be framed by the beloved singer Stavros Konstantinou and Sasha Glyky. The call center which will receive contributions from the public is a courtesy of CYTA.
- On Thursday 13th June 2024, the Telethon and the Embassy of Cuba in Cyprus will present the charity concert “A Night in Havana – Jazz Fusion“. The concert will take place at 20:30, at the Platy Aglantzias amphitheater, in collaboration with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and will host the renowned Cuban pianist Rolando Luna, former member of the legendary band Buena Vista Social Club, as well as the Cuban singer Marjorie Montero The arrangements for the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra will be performed by conductor Giorgos Kountouri. Tickets are sold through Sold Out Tickets
- On Saturday, June 15, a fundraiser will be held by dozens of volunteers and organized groups in supermarkets throughout Cyprus.
