The debate on the merging of municipalities and communities is raging in the party background and monopolizes the public debate on the reform of Local Government, which has unfortunately been overshadowed by a strong sense of localism that refers to divisive mentalities and perceptions of the past. Parties, MPs, mukhtars, mayors, azades and city councilors put their own personal and financial interests above that of society as a whole, refuse to surrender and work out merger scenarios in order to maintain their small kingdoms for whose sake it seems will not hesitate to blow up the ongoing reform in Local Government. How; Voting in favor of holding local referendums. This possibility, which is very likely, is the worst nightmare of the competent Minister of Interior Mr. Nikos Nouris and not only.
It is clear and demonstrated, after all, through the techno-economic studies that the Republic paid generously to ensure that without the numerical reduction of the municipalities by mergers-mergers the goal of the reform cannot be achieved. This is because: First, without the mergers, significant savings will not be achieved, such as the synergy of joint projects and services, which will make the new municipalities viable. Second, without the mergers we will not have the critical mass that will increase the administrative adequacy of the new municipalities.
