The Mayor of Limassol, Nikos Nikolaidis, described today as an important day for the city of Limassol, as after many problems and delays, Misiaouli and Kavazoglou and Gildiz avenues were handed over to traffic, in the context of the regeneration of the area.

For the project, which had started in October 2018, the Municipality of Limassol was forced in 2019 to terminate the contract with the original contractor, who expressed inability to complete it.

In addition to the delay caused by the process for new offers and the undertaking of the project by a new contractor, the project was further delayed by the appearance of the pandemic and restrictive measures, which had provoked the reaction of the initiative group of shopkeepers and residents, as well as POVEK .

Further delays in the delivery of the road to the traffic brought oxidation problems that were identified in the bridge of the area, known as “four traffic lights” and for which a new support had to be made.

Today the road was opened to traffic in the presence of the Mayor, Nikos Nikolaidis and municipal councilors, who expressed their satisfaction for the development, but also their sympathy for the shopkeepers and residents who have been suffering in recent years.

“It is an important day for this project but also for the traffic in Limassol in general”, said the Mayor of Limassol, adding that with the delivery to Misiaouli and Kavazoglou, “Limassol is reunited through the bridge of four traffic lights”.

“A bridge that was built in 1870 and all its 8 pillars had to be inspected and the bases had to be removed, inspected, new metal pillars had to be made in order to have a safe bridge today,” he added.

Mr. Nikolaidis pointed out that some works on the sidewalks are still pending, which, however, do not affect the smooth traffic on the boulevard.

Saying that the project was justifiably delayed due to the time-consuming procedures for terminating the contract with the original contractor, the re-announcement of bids, the pandemic, but also the problems identified on the bridge, the Limassol Mayor said he understood the inconvenience caused to them.

“I want to assure you that the municipal council and the services of the Municipality have tried very hard to deal with all the problems so that the project does not stop, and if there is anything that could be considered as compensation for this inconvenience, it is that a model project is delivered. , which will help in the commercial upgrade of the area and the quality of life of the citizen “, concluded Nikos Nikolaidis in his statements.

It is reminded that the project is part of the projects co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund of the EU for the Programming Period 2014-2020.
