The winter may have passed and with it the need to heat houses, apartments, offices and generally work and leisure areas, but in the following months, until October, the cost of heating will be followed by the cost of cooling.
The surge in fuel costs and consequently the filling of oil and gas tanks lead citizens to search for the cheapest solution to maintain a tolerable temperature in the areas where they live or operate.
< p>The 2nd vice-president of ETEK and Mechanical Engineer, Eliza Vassileiou, explains to “F” that it is appropriate to act in order not to waste money or even to reduce the cost of the existing systems that we have in our houses/apartments.
< p>For the summer, maintenance of the air conditioners is recommended, which if they are old technology, and consequently energy-intensive, it is advantageous to replace them, while for the winter the heat pumps are considered by Mrs. Vassiliou as the most profitable for heating, since their use is 35% -40% cheaper. Oil is expensive and LPG is expensive but it is cheaper than oil. Heaters are a cheaper solution (without meaning they do not burn) but in practice, they just heat the air and relatively small space, leaving the walls and floors cold. & Nbsp;

For the summer months, Ms. Vassiliou states that modern air conditioners are the best solution that creates comfortable living conditions. However, if one buys a new air conditioner, it is suggested that the criterion should not be the purchase price but the efficiency and economic operation and of course the life time of the air conditioner. But if an air conditioner is, for example, 15 years old, then it is worth replacing it, which, as he says, will bring savings that will cover the purchase price.
Further, in terms of air conditioners, submits the following suggestions: & nbsp;
1. Cool the house when the temperature is low, ie early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
2. If we have awnings (shutters, awnings, curtains) we have them closed during the hours with high sunlight and we open them during the rest of the hours.
3. The thermostat of the air conditioner must be adjusted to 25-28 degrees so that we do not have a large temperature difference from the outside environment. The larger this difference, the greater the heat loss to the environment. In addition, extreme temperatures cause dryness of the air in the area causing discomfort. & Nbsp;
4. We turn off our device completely when no one is in the area.
5. Adjust the blinds of the air conditioner so that the air is directed upwards to achieve proper distribution of air in the space. The velocity of the air flow should be such that it does not create strong currents in the space (low).
6. The air in the rooms must be renewed regularly (air conditioners recycle the air in the room, they do not put fresh air in the room).
7. Air filters must be cleaned at least once a month (simple washing by users). If they are not cleaned, the air circulation is slowed down and the efficiency of the air conditioner is reduced. In addition, it creates an unhealthy environment (dust and dirt), causing breathing problems and allergies.
8. Once a year the air conditioning units must be maintained by specialized personnel. An air conditioner that is not properly maintained has a reduced efficiency of about 5%.
9. We replace the old air conditioners with new ones, with variable frequency (Inverter) and high energy efficiency. This saves a lot of energy and is quieter.
Heat pumps for winter
Regarding the heating of the premises during the winter months, Ms. Vassiliou considers that the best choice is the heat pumps, which operate on electricity and their big advantage is that they consume about 35% -40% less electricity compared to other heating methods. He also explains that if combined with the installation of photovoltaic systems the result will be even better for the owners.
He also notes that the efficiency of the boiler which operates with either oil or LPG is lower. p>
Regarding the installation cost of the heating pump system in relation to the gas or oil boilers, it is higher € 3,000- € 4,000, but it was reduced in relation to the initial stage of purchase and installation. The difference in installation costs depends on several factors, such as the orientation inside the building, the height and the insulation. & Nbsp;
But in an existing house with a conventional boiler (oil/gas) we can not just remove it and install another. Heat pumps operate at lower temperatures so if we are talking about underfloor heating the pipes have to be installed differently, while the bodies will be different, so basically the whole system has to be removed, which is costly. & Nbsp;
For an average house (in terms of area) the installation of a heating pump ranges from € 10,000- € 12,000 while the other heating methods (LPG and oil) cost around € 2,000- € 3,000 less. & Nbsp;
As Regarding the installation and the fears that are expressed, Ms. Vassiliou indicates that when the installation is done by an authorized person, it is safe. There are, he added, many safety valves.
He also explains that the central heating (oil/gas) heats the building elements (walls and floors) which emit heat back, so the house remains for some time hot even when we turn off the heating, which is not the case with the various heaters.
