An important step in the direction of submitting a candidacy for the Limassol City Hall was made on Friday night, 11/06/2021 by the architect Giannis Armeftis.
In a meeting of friends and members of the Independent Initiative “For Limassol” held at a central hotel in the city, Giannis Armeftis shared his thoughts to run for mayor of Limassol as an independent candidate.
The room, in compliance with the measures, turned out to be too small to withstand the mass attendance of people, who participated and watched the discussion even from outside the hotel.
The “architect” of the “For Limassol” initiative, presented the proposals for the city which are based on ten pillars (society and people, innovation-technology-tourism, funding-European programs, governance-programming, youth-education-sports, green-environment-health, culture, neighborhoods, traffic-mobility-public space, city identity).
In a lively discussion, ideas, challenges, proposals were presented, which can push Limassol to a sustainable development model that creates quality of life, opportunities, work, easy green movements, social structures and interaction.
The Independent Initiative “For Limassol” was founded last March and immediately opened a channel of public consultation with active citizens, institutions, organizations, technocrats, scientists and social groups.
A very interesting modern tool used for this is the discord platform, in the “channels” of which citizens submit reflections and suggestions per pillar. This platform introduces for the first time in the public consultation the technology and the direct contact of the citizen with the institutions.
Asked about the claim of the city council, Giannis Armeftis answered that the support and consent of the members and friends of the Initiative is a key factor in claiming the position of the first citizen of the city. Attendees applauded this position, which paves the way for the official announcement of the candidacy in the near future.
Giannis Armeftis clarified that his candidacy will be independent, but will open a circle of contacts with all political parties (except ELAM).
In statements to the newspaper Politis, he said he was excited by the warm response he received from friends and members of the Initiative.
He noted that “friends of the Initiative enthusiastically embraced this proposal and said they were ready to continue to contribute, as they have been doing in recent months, to shaping a comprehensive program for a better Limassol.”
