President Anastasiadis had a telephone conversation with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Mr. Josep Borel, focusing on the Cyprus issue, today, according to a statement issued by the Government Spokesman. Earlier tonight, the President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Anastasiadis, had a telephone conversation with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Mr. Josep Borrell, focusing on the Cyprus issue.
President Anastasiadis briefed Mr. Borel on the latest developments, including the informal Conference to be convened under the auspices of the United Nations, as well as the initiatives he has taken.
In this context, the President of the Republic referred to his recent meeting with the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Cyprus, Jane Hall Luth, as well as the latest proposals he has made to Mr. Guterres, including and a series of Confidence Building Measures that can act as a reinforcer in the effort to resume substantive talks aimed at resolving the Cyprus issue within the agreed UN framework and on the basis of EU principles and values. President Anastasiadis also stressed the importance of its active participation EU in the new effort, in line with the conclusions of previous European Councils.
During the conversation, the President of the Republic stressed the need to focus on achieving a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem on the basis of a Bi-Zonal Bicommunal Federation, reiterating his strong will to resume a fruitful dialogue from the point where it was interrupted in the Diaspora. and according to the meeting of the two leaders with the Secretary General on November 25, 2019 in Berlin. He further reiterated the High Representative's support for the de-escalation of the situation in the wider region and the cessation of Turkey's unilateral unilateral action, either on the ground in Famagusta or in the EEZ of the Republic of Cyprus, as well as incendiary statements by Turkey that do not help to create a favorable climate, especially in the critical situation we are in.
