Andreas Kalli: Unfulfilled Journey

Ak Unfulfilled Journey 22.4.24

The House of Cyprus presents the exhibition Unfulfilled Journey by Andreas Kalli, curated by art historian Niki Papaspyrou and coordinated by Maria Ragia.

The exhibition opens on Monday 22 April 2024, 20:00 – 22:00 and will run until Friday 24 May 2024.

The audiovisual exhibition/installation presents thirteen kinetic sculptures of three different dimensions.

Andreas Kalli uses the archetypal symbol of a bird in flight to speak about the concepts of travel, existence, unfulfillment, the position of the individual in the historical context of his time.

Those concepts are core pursuits of his visual work. The wings flap loudly and rhythmically, transcribing the singularity of the sense of ascension, of heading towards the sky, away from the earth.

They transcribe the journey, the escape, the liberation, the movement towards the new, the human desire for the new and unexplored. The concept of travel is multifaceted. It includes the agony and joy of the unknown, freedom, change, but also the violence of forced movement that thousands of people in the world are subjected to, uprooting, loss of place and identity.

The staging of the space, with the use of light and sound, creates for each individual a subjective experience and understanding of the “journey”.

In human history, birds have always had multiple symbolisms. If each era gives its own interpretations of its symbols, Andreas Kallis’ installation Unfulfilled Journey could make us ask ourselves how we “see” and interpret “birds” in an enduring present.

The exhibition is supported by the Deputy Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus.
