Clouds over the Presidential Palace after Palma's departure

Frixos Dalitis

Heavy clouds are gathering over the government camp, which is experiencing the impact of the rift that has occurred between the leadership of DISY and the former Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulidis, against the background of the 2023 presidential elections.

After the resignation of the minister, the exit door was opened yesterday by the Undersecretary to the President Vassilis Palmas, who in his resignation letter invokes personal reasons. The information, however, insists that his resignation is directly related to the presidential election and his choice to campaign alongside Nikos Christodoulidis, when he announces his candidacy. An element, however, which neither side confirms at this stage.

The same information states that other resignations will follow, while next to Nikos Christodoulidis they place the former Minister of Energy George Lakkotrypis. The scenarios with the two former DIKO members and now DIPA next to Nikos Christodoulidis have already started to be discussed in the DIKO space as a negative element in the possibility of their own support in the Christodoulidis candidacy.

In Pindarou they avoid commenting on yesterday's resignation. At the same time, however, sources from DISY do not hide their dissatisfaction with the fact that government officials who had the support of the party, turn their backs on them today, making other choices for the presidential elections.

Regarding the successive situation in the position of deputy minister despite the President, the information shows that the PD has approached the former government Spokesman Kyriakos Kousios for his return to the Presidential Palace. What the estimates and information converge on is that the formerly calm atmosphere in the government camp has been lost lately. It is now clear that introversion in the ruling party will continue, while in the opposition camp everything is still fluid.
