The Cyprus Chamber of Shipping welcomes the outcome of the tripartite negotiation, on 29 November 2022, for the inclusion of the shipping sector in the EU emissions trading system.

< p>We are pleased to note, it says, that EU institutions have adopted a number of positions promoted by the shipping industry which will help decarbonise shipping through a more realistic implementation of the emissions trading system of the EU on shipping.

The shipping industry will not be able to tackle the major decarbonisation task alone, he notes, adding that everyone involved needs to be on board. The Chamber therefore also welcomes the recognition of the 'polluter pays' principle through mandatory requirements to pass on the costs of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme to commercial ship operators.

It also notes that the  phasing in emissions from shipping over a three-year period from 2024-2026 is also important to ensure a smooth transition in the sector.

The tripartite shipping dialogue agreement will be subject to a comprehensive agreement for all sectors of the EU emissions trading system which is expected to be reached at the last tripartite meeting on 15-16 December 2022, it says.
