    Who was Nikos Charalambous
Actor and director. He was born in Nicosia on June 1, 1941. He graduated from the Pancypriot High School and worked for 2 years at the Cyprus Radio Foundation while at the same time attending dramatic art courses at the Hellenic Music Academy. Together with others he founded the “Theatre of Art” in Nicosia. In 1962, he continued his theater studies in Athens, at the “Theatre of Art” of Karolos Koon, where he also worked as an actor, in fact he was a key member of Karolos Koon's troupe for about 7 years. He then left for Germany where he worked with the Nuremberg State Theater, both as an actor and assistant director. At the same time, he attended a six-month theater seminar at the University of Erlagen. He also worked with Berlin TV. He taught acting, movement and speech at the Rome Academy, R.A.D.A. London, USC, Los Angeles, Berlin, Athens and Cyprus.

In 1969, when he returned to Cyprus, he was for 2 years an executive of the RIK Theater, presenting works mainly of the international classical repertoire that in then they were also transferred to television.

The series of those works on Cypriot television, as well as others that became television productions at the time (with Evi Gavrielidis as the main director) contributed significantly to the development of theater and was also a great success in Greece. In 1971, the Cyprus Theater Organization (THOK) was founded and the RIK Theater ended its offer. N. Charalambous, together with other executives of the RIK theater, switched to the Cyprus Theater Organization. He was a key member of THOK until 1974. In 1973 he directed “Cyclops” by Euripides, with amateur actors, and took part in the East Berlin International Youth Festival.

He also collaborated, as a director, with ” Experimental Stage” of Nicosia.

After the tragedy of the summer of 1974, he left for Greece. There he collaborated again with the “Art Theater” of Karolos Koon. He also collaborated with the “Thessalian Theatre”, while later managing the Kalamata Theater for a while. In 1976, he was again summoned to Cyprus by THOK, with whom he collaborated again. Since then he has been moving between Cyprus and Greece, as a director. His first “official” appearance as a director in the Greek arena was with the play “Attalos III”, which he directed for THOK and was presented at the Athens Festival in 1980. The following year he directed his “Iketides” at THOK Euripides, which were also presented at the Epidaurus Festival and were one of the most talked about performances in Cyprus and Greece. Afterwards, Nikos Charalambous directed many works for THOK and for Greek theaters, including several works of the ancient Greek classical repertoire with which he participated in ancient drama festivals in Epidaurus, Delphi and elsewhere. In the field of stage presentation of ancient tragedies and comedies he has a personal directorial point of view and a new approach which as a rule creates many reactions, either for or against. Anyway, his performances are always much talked about and interesting.

In Greece he collaborated with the National Theatre, the State Theater of Northern Greece, the State Theater of Kalamata, the Kaisariani Theatre, the Vougiouklakis Theatre, as well as with several other theater groups. In 1988 he won in Greece the title of the best actor for that year. As a director, he has staged around 200 works of all time, in Germany, Greece, Cyprus, International Festivals, Epidaurus, Herodion, Megaron Musik, National Opera, Cyprus, etc.

He has been awarded as an actor with the Koun prize from the Municipality of Athens, as a director with the Doros Loizou prize, as a director with the THOK prize, while he has also been awarded the prize for General Contribution to the Theater of Cyprus by the Cypriot State.
