The deepening of the Cyprus-Greece cooperation in the field of digital transformation is at the center of a two-day official visit of the Minister of State and Digital Government Kyriakos Pierrakakis to Cyprus, at the invitation of the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Government. The Minister is accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Digital Government Thodoris Libanios.
The main topic of discussion was the acceleration of the digital transition, as a key pillar of recovery, growth and prosperity, as well as ensuring the viability and resilience of the two countries in an ever-changing international environment. The strong will of the two sides was reaffirmed to expand and deepen their cooperation, to strengthen the critical IT and telecommunications structures of the two countries and to optimize a modern and flexible model of digital governance, which will provide quality e-services to the citizens. >
During the visit, a Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of Digital Policy and Cybersecurity was signed, at an official Ceremony at the Presidential Palace, which provides, inter alia, for the exchange of good practices and know-how for specific digital transformation initiatives already planned and/or implemented. . At the same time, the creation of bilateral channels for the exchange of information on projects of common interest, such as the development of quality digital services, the design and adoption of a holistic approach to the online presence of government agencies and the implementation of strategic e-government projects in priority areas such as justice, education. Finally, bilateral cooperation is institutionalized for more effective response to cyber security risks and threats, as well as joint participation in European and national programs in this field.
According to Kyriakos Kokkinos , “Today we are laying the foundations for an expanded cooperation based on a common vision, common values, mutual respect and solidarity. A cooperation that provides a series of targeted actions with added value for the economy and society of our two countries. A cooperation that utilizes and builds on the know-how, expertise, skills and achievements to date of both countries, for mutual benefit “. Thanking Kyriakos Pierrakakis for the long-term support and close cooperation that has already been developed between the two countries in the field of digital transformation, Kyriakos Kokkinos stressed that “In this so difficult but also so important project, Cyprus and Greece, we choose to act together, joining forces to implement together a parallel program of digital transformation, beneficial for all and with a focus on the citizen.”
In his own intervention, Kyriakos Pierrakakis noted that “We are here to put our own stone in the relationship between Greece and Cyprus. And we do it by signing a memorandum of cooperation which was founded eight months ago, during the visit of Kyriakos Kokkinos to Greece and our first meeting at the Ministry of Digital Government. Greece and Cyprus have a lot to teach each other about digital transformation. For almost three years now, Greece has been recording its own progress in the digital transformation “. Further, he added that “In the face of the challenges of the 4th Industrial Revolution, the exchange of good practices helps us all become better. So we are here today to discuss openly how reforms were designed and implemented that have improved the daily lives of citizens. It is a historical imperative of Greece and Cyprus to cooperate closely and effectively and today with the memorandum we are signing we are making the beginning “.
On his part, Thodoris Livanios stated that “Digital reality requires partnerships, convergences and continuous adaptations to developments. Our cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus has individual significant bilateral benefits but at the same time contributes to the continuous joint upgrade of our countries in the international technological map “.
Before the ceremony, Kyriakos Pierrakakis and Thodoris Livanios had a private meeting with the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis, while, during their visit, they will meet, among others, with the Speaker of Parliament Annita Dimitriou, the Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II Lefos and the Mayor Giorkatzi.
