EAC measures after electrocution death of vultures, environmental organizations demand – Hunting Service – They express disappointment
Their disappointment is expressed by environmental organizations and the Service Thiras and Panidas, regarding the deaths of vultures from electrocution asking AEC to take measures.
In a joint statement the implementation partners of the “Life with the Vultures” project, Game and Fauna Service, Birdlife Cyprus, Terra Cypria and Vulture Conservation Foundation state that last Saturday two bald vultures were found dead by electric shock in the area between Kelokedari and Salami, noting that these deaths could have been avoided if the EAC had implemented remedial measures at that location.
Specifically, the announcement states that another vulture died at the exact same location in April 2022, while in 2018 another vulture died in the same vulture area after hitting an overhead line.
These agencies point out that the deaths of vultures “are equivalent to enormous ecological damage” and that the EAC was informed of the dangers of the specific stakes after the death of the first vulture in 2022.
They also speak of “inflexibility” on the part of the Authority to take measures, noting that “for four years there has been a relevant fund available to the EAC from the Game and Fauna Service through a European program”.
“The situation must be dealt with immediately and the EAC at the suggestion of the Game and Fauna Service should act immediately to insulate all the poles that have been identified as high risk for electrocution for the Vulture and the Vulture, as well as the marking of high voltage overhead lines with a high risk of impact for the Vulture “, the announcement concludes.
