The Church will continue to have a voice in the national issue, said Metropolitan George of Paphos speaking at an event organized in Paphos by the Coordinating Support Committee of of his candidacy for the Archbishop elections.
If the church did not exist, he said, "we would neither be Greeks, nor Orthodox Christians, but we would have been leveled by the conquerors". He added that the church must keep this word until the place is liberated and until human rights are fully restored throughout Cyprus.
He also said that when Cyprus is liberated and when all the rights enjoyed by Europeans and free people of the whole world are enjoyed by us, then the Church will place this burden on the shoulders of the government which will be democratically elected by the people. This is happening, the Metropolitan of Paphos continued, in Greece as well since the Greek church placed this burden on the shoulders of the Greek government. However, until these prevail, we have a say, he added.
George Pafos continued that since the citizen and the smaller party have a say on the national issue, then the Church has much more. With the evolution of society, he added, the problems are what a new Archbishop must have in front of him.
He also touched on the issue of the development of technology and life sciences that have led the world to unprecedented dilemmas, as he said . The fact that previously, he said, "we did not have the possibility to do organ transplants did not create any problems, and the fact that we were previously unable to intervene and help children with artificial insemination also did not create problems".
The Metropolitan of Paphos stated that we do not find direct answers in the Holy Bible since, as he said, the Holy Bible was written thousands of years ago. He also said that the Bible was valid then, is valid today and will be valid forever.
