With the works in the last few days “coming out” of the site of the project itself and being carried out in the surrounding highways and public spaces, the time for the official unveiling of the “Park of Colors” of Paphos, is now counting down. The largest urban park in Cyprus is almost complete and it is a matter of a few weeks to be given for use to the public of the city and province. For days now, travelers in the central area of Hellados and Evagoras Pallikaridis Avenues have seen the works that are in full swing have been extended to the public spaces around the park in order to complete the accesses to and from the project.
The largest urban park in Cyprus covers a huge part of the central fabric of the city between Greece Avenue, the streets of the shopping center to the district of Mouttallos and which includes the well-known area of the “Pempes”, which was one of the most famous green areas of the city and which in recent decades had been degraded into a hotbed of pollution and anti-social activities.
It covers an area of 32 thousand square meters, making it the largest urban park in Cyprus and the “richest” on the island both in terms of greenery and infrastructure. Hundreds of new trees are planted in the Park, while it includes square gathering places, playground, cafeteria, tennis court, basketball court, small soccer field, locker rooms, skateboard, climbing wall, 3-6 meters outdoor, office space, aromatic-botanical garden, & nbsp; sanitary facilities, 83 parking spaces for the public and the disabled, service areas, main route, and entrance gates. & nbsp; & nbsp;
The proposal for naming the park belongs to the Municipal Secretary of Paphos, Themis Filippidis. The “Park of Colors” was selected among seven other proposals by the plenary of the Municipal Council of Paphos. Based on the reasoning of the decision, the name of the park in the plot next to Charilaou Trikoupi, Athenas and Amathountos streets aims to promote the value and importance of colors in everyday life. In order for this design to begin to be implemented, after the award of the architectural tender, the Municipality of Paphos needed to start a huge cleaning project, since the space was nothing but a major source of pollution, tastelessness and nuisance in the heart of Paphos. .
Paphos municipal councilor, Panagiotis Vorkas, told “F” & nbsp; that during the cleaning work, tons of whole rubbish were found and removed, as well as arbitrary stumps and cheap materials.
“And this, since the area had been abandoned and deserted for at least the last 50 years”, he said characteristically, “which posed serious risks to public health, but also a possible source of fire in the heart of the city.”
The cleaning and removal works of these materials, Mr. Vorkas pointed out, took place in the presence of officials of the Department of Forests, in order to avoid possible cyclical reactions. who often invoke the protection of the green to cover decades of interventions and arbitrariness in public open spaces of the city.
