Europe Day is the anniversary of the 'Shuman Declaration' of 9 May 1950
On illumination of monuments and symbolic buildings in over 60 cities across the EU, Nicosia will participate on May 9, Day of of Europe and one month before the European elections, with the illumination of the city's Town Hall and Liberty Square.
As announced by the European Parliament, monuments such as the Arch of Triomphe in Paris, the Colosseum in Rome and the Grand Place in Brussels will be lit up with the EU flag or the slogan “Use your vote – So that others don't decide for you” from Wednesday 8 to Thursday 9 May.
Among the buildings and monuments that will participate are the Rio Bridge – Antirrio in Greece, the Samuel Beckett Bridge and the Irish Parliament Buildings in Dublin, Vilnius City Hall, St Angelo Fortress in Valletta, the Presidential Palace in Bratislava, Cibeles Square in Madrid and the Romanian Parliament in Bucharest.
The aim of the campaign in cooperation with the European Parliament and national and local authorities, it is noted, is to send a message of unity to the 440 million European citizens about the importance of the European elections.
Europe Day is the anniversary of the “Schuman Declaration” of 9 May 1950, by which the then French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, proposed the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community and a new form political cooperation in Europe, which evolved into today's European Union.
