Between the dates of November 14 and November 20, 2022, Cyprus-wide checks on the correct driving of personal mobility devices (e-scooters) were carried out, based on the recently enacted legislation governing the use of such devices.

The aim of the controls was the compliance of electric scooter operators with the provisions of the new legislation, but also to raise their awareness of road safety issues when using these devices.

Alongside the traffic controls, the Police continues educating the public about the provisions of the new legislation regarding electric scooters and their proper use on the road.

Among the main provisions of the Legislation brought into force are the obligation of operators to wear a protective helmet at all times and, during the night, fluorescent insignia. At the same time, it is determined that the movement of such devices can only take place on a road with a maximum speed limit of 30km/h, on a cycle path, on a cycle lane or on an extension of a cycle path which bears a special sign. On highways, expressways, squares or pedestrian streets (unless otherwise determined by the relevant municipality or community), their use is prohibited.

According to the Legislation, the right to use e-scooters has only people over the age of 14.

During the checks during the above period, the Police proceeded with a total of 80 complaints as follows:

  • 49 persons were reported for driving in unauthorized traffic areas
  • Two people were reported for driving on an expressway
  • Four people were reported for driving outside the designated traffic lane
  • Two people were reported since their e-scooters did not have running lights
  • 23 persons were reported for not wearing a protective helmet
